What is floor contamination?

Floor contamination is any substance present on a floor’s surface that reduces the grip between a shoe and the floor, including water, grease, food debris, dust, and residue left behind by cleaning products. It is one of the most common and most overlooked causes of slip accidents, because a contaminated floor can still look clean and dry. In slip risk terms, contamination is treated as a distinct, measurable factor rather than a vague description of dirt.

The short why

Grip depends on direct contact between a shoe sole and the floor beneath it. Contamination sits between the two, acting as a barrier that reduces friction. The more contamination present, and the more slippery that contamination is, the less grip is available, regardless of how the floor looks to the eye.

Why looks-clean doesn’t mean safe

Most facilities and health and safety teams judge floor safety visually. If there’s no puddle, no obvious spillage, the floor is assumed to be fine. This is a reasonable instinct, but it’s not a reliable one.

Contamination is often invisible. A thin film of grease from a kitchen extraction system, or a light layer of residue left by the wrong cleaning product, can sit on a floor without being visible at all, while still significantly reducing slip resistance. This is why we encourage teams to test to know, rather than look and assume. A floor’s appearance tells you almost nothing about its actual grip.

Where contamination fits in the wider picture

Contamination is one of six factors in CHIMES, the framework we use to break down slip risk: Contamination, Heel, Individual, Maintenance, Environment, Surface. It sits alongside factors like footwear and floor surface itself, but it’s often the one that changes fastest, since it can build up hour by hour depending on footfall, weather and site activity.

This matters for multi-site organisations in particular. Contamination levels at an entrance during a wet Tuesday morning will look completely different to the same entrance on a dry Friday afternoon. A single inspection, or a single cleaning schedule applied uniformly, rarely accounts for this.

Common sources of contamination

Contamination doesn’t come from one place. In most commercial environments, it builds up from a combination of:

  • Water from spills, condensation, or rain tracked in at entrances
  • Grease and oil, particularly near food preparation areas
  • Dust and fine debris carried in on footwear
  • Cleaning product residue, when the wrong product or dilution is used

Each of these can reduce grip on its own. Combined, they compound the risk, and this is often where incident-free records become misleading. A site can carry all of these low-level, largely invisible risks for a long time without a reported incident, simply because nothing has triggered a fall yet.

What to do about it

The reliable way to manage contamination risk is to measure it rather than assume it based on appearance. Pendulum testing measures a floor’s actual slip resistance under both dry and wet conditions, producing a Pendulum Test Value, or PTV, that gives an objective read on grip. This removes the guesswork that comes with visual inspection.

From there, the fix usually isn’t more cleaning. It’s the right cleaning, applied to the right areas, using products and methods that actually restore grip rather than leaving residue behind. Testing tells you whether your current approach is working, and where it isn’t.
