How does water on the floor cause slips?

Water on a floor causes slips by sitting between the sole of a shoe and the floor surface, reducing the friction needed to keep a foot from sliding. Even a thin, barely visible film of water can lower a floor’s grip dramatically, particularly on smooth or worn surfaces. Grip relies on direct contact between a shoe and the floor. Water acts as a lubricant, creating a thin layer that the shoe skates across rather than grips onto. The thinner and more even that layer is, the harder it can be to spot, and the more dangerous it often is.

Why a small amount of water is often worse than a puddle

It’s a common assumption that the bigger the spill, the bigger the risk. In practice, a large, obvious puddle tends to get noticed and dealt with quickly. A thin film of water, spread evenly across a floor, is far easier to miss and can reduce grip just as much, sometimes more, depending on the floor surface.

This is why testing a specific floor matters more than applying a general assumption about “wet floors” across an entire site.

The reliable way to manage water-related slip risk is to measure a floor’s slip resistance under wet conditions directly, rather than relying on how dry or clean it appears. Pendulum testing does this by producing a Pendulum Test Value, or PTV, for a floor when wet, giving an objective read on how much grip remains rather than a guess based on appearance.

Once you know the wet PTV of your highest-risk areas, such as entrances and food service zones, you can make informed decisions about matting, flooring choice, or floor treatment, rather than adding more signage and hoping it’s enough.
