- Maintenance: are current cleaning products or methods actively reducing grip
- Environment: are lighting, gradients or wet-to-dry transitions contributing to the risk
- Surface: is the floor material itself worn or naturally low-grip, which is the one factor a treatment can directly address
If the surface itself is the weak link, once contamination, maintenance and environment have been ruled out or addressed, a treatment is likely to help. If the real issue is a spillage point that never gets cleaned promptly, no treatment will fix that on its own.
What does the treatment process actually involve?
A properly applied treatment isn’t a single step. Within the Slipology Method, it sits inside the Amend stage, the point where a floor and its conditions are fixed at source, based on what the Assess stage has already measured.
A typical process looks like this:
- Measure the floor’s current PTV, wet and dry, to confirm where it sits against a safe threshold
- Identify whether the surface itself is the primary cause of low grip, using a framework like CHIMES
- Apply the appropriate treatment for that specific floor material
- Re-measure the PTV afterwards to confirm the treatment has actually improved grip
- Record the result, so there’s a dated baseline for future comparison
Skipping the measurement steps, before or after, means you’re applying a treatment on assumption rather than evidence. That’s the same mistake as treating a single test as permanent proof: you end up guessing rather than knowing.
Do anti-slip treatments last forever?
No treatment is permanent. Like the floor itself, a treated surface is subject to wear, footfall and cleaning products over time, and its grip can decline again if it isn’t maintained properly afterwards.
