Frequently Asked Questions

What are my legal requirements?

The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires employers to ensure the health and safety of all employees and anyone affected by their work, so far as is reasonably practicable, which means balancing the level of risk against the measures needed to control the risk in terms of money, time or trouble.  This includes taking steps to control slip and trip risks.

How do you test the risk?

Pendulum testing is carried out using a swinging imitation heel, which sweeps over a surface in a controlled manner - allowing the test to measure effect - resulting in a PTV value - giving a slip potential.

What is the risk of slips and trips?

Slips and trips are the most common cause of workplace injuries and over 40% of all reported injuries to members of the public. HSE advise that the majority of all slip accidents happen when a floor becomes contaminated. Check out our services page for more information.

How much can I reduce the risk?

HSE estimates that with effective ongoing management you can reduce your slip risk by over 50%.
